THE BLACKHEADS before the BLACKHEADS:

Do Or Die at the startDorien doesn't know for sure anymore....it's been a while. Her first serious band was SMELL OF THOUGHTS, that started in 1984. They played 3 shows, from which one was in Paradiso. In 1985 Dorien started SADISTIC BUSDRIVERS with her then-boyfriend Henk, with which she also did a couple of shows in Holland. Then the real thing started, on a 1989 holiday in Portugal with Ernie. The two of them decided to start a band. This band eventually became DO OR DIE, an all-women friend-band that rose to great height. ...and a couple of years and 200 shows laterA couple of tours all over Europe, a cancelled USA-tour with L7 but still playing over 250 shows. The band split in 1993, leaving behind two demo's, and two albums (Crush and feel it, lp-only, and Shake The Stars, cd-only). Kirsten, the former singer, now lives in Switzerland. Dorien is currently playing with some old friends in a modern dance act: she plays the african drums.

btd in 1986, belgiumMarc started out in 1983 with BTD, a punkband of 4 teenagers that eventually was known throughout Holland and Belgium. Uptempo paced punk and hardcore with a strong 'scandinavian' feel to it, with political and personal lyrics. BTD played all over Holland and a couple of times in Belgium with bandsthe split album like LAITZ, OBJECTION OVERRULED, LARM, SKEEZICKS, LOUD WARNING, INDIREKT, DASBREETELZ, GEPOPEL and the likes. They were part of the dutch punkscene, and recorded a split album with KIKKERSPUUG, LOUD WARNING (Gwynn of LW plays bass in the NRA) and LAITZ, called On Our Way To Fools Paradise. BTD eventually split in 1988...nobody knows for sure why. the 7 inchShortly after, Marc teamed up again with BTD's vocalist Casper and BTD's guitarplayer Marco to form a new band called BETRAY. Marco picked up the drums and from punkband THE MUCKRAKERS Paul and Boris both joined on guitar. This band started as a straight edge band with political lyrics, being part of a small scene in which also bands like PROFOUND (later MANLIFTINGBANNER) and SEEIN' RED participated. BETRAY recorded one 7" for the German label Crucial Response Records (thanx again Peter!). BETRAY only played a couple of shows: one in Holland, one in Belgium, one in Germany and some in the UK on the split tour with belgium political straight edge band RISE ABOVE. betray in belgium, 1990After this tour the band split in 1991, leaving a already recorded second 7" on the shelf, and one song of that session made it onto the Share Common Ground Benefit sampler LP from Crucial Response. Marco of BETRAY went on to do some session work for several bands and with hiphop-metal act BULLETPROOF he made it to national tv. Most successfull was the BUFFELKUT project with members from NRA and other band resulting in nationwide airplay for the song "Jan Douwe, Jan Douwe, zal ik je bek verbouwe?"

the dance cleopatra demo Do The Dutch Ska Dance Pt. I

Dance Cleopatra in 1994Then Marc met Eric and they started the ska band DANCE CLEOPATRA. This band lasted from 1991 'till 1995, and played some legendary shows. They played full-on uptempo 90-ies ska, mostly their own songs but some covers like Prijzenslag, Guns Of Navarone, Rat Race and ofcourse Dance Cleopatra. Dance Cleopatra has had over 20 different members, of which a couple where known of other bands (THIRD WAY, TRIBE OF IDIOTZ) or made it in other bands (SILLY WALKS, BEATBUSTERS, VITAMIN X). DANCE CLEOPATRA released one demo, and the song WHO COMES IN LAST made it onto the dutch ska sampler Do The Dutch Ska Dance. The band split in 1995 into The SCREAMIN ABDUBS (3 DC-members) and LONGSHOT (also 3 DC-members). Marc quit LONGSHOT in 1998, and in return joined (like a phoenix from the flames) CLEOPATRA 2000, an electronic skaband with ex-DANCE CLEOPATRA members only.

longshot live at Patronaat, Haarlem, 1997LONGSHOT was Marc's most successfull band with which he was featured on six different cd's, and he played over 70 shows with them, including the winning of the Rob Acda award in 1997, and some top-shows like De Instuif, Camping Stortemelk, The Meander and The Melkweg (all with Gert Jan on vocals) and The Flatertheek and Paradiso in 1996, Bevrijdingspop and Beeckestijn in 1997 and BBC&W, de Bakkerij and Donkey Shot in 1998.

Sandrijn played along with metal-albums in his basement for a couple of years (1986-1989). In the meantime he was playing in his first band the MORONIC FUN SQUAD (from which all members besides Sandrijn himself became busdrivers and truckdrivers). After that Sandrijn joined metalband A FOOLS' PARADISE (1990-1994) with which he played around Holland.

A FOOLS PARADISE

He also played in a project called CLOACA with BEP-members. In between all that he filled in for the drummer of BRUTAL OBSCENITY. BRUTAL OBSCENITY played a couple of shows with Sandrijn, but after recording two albums (with a different singer and a different drummer) the band collapsed. Sandrijn was able to form a new band, DENIAL (1994-1995) in which Sem of Caesar-fame auditioned for the position of singer. But that place was taken by Boris Bouma, who after the demise of DENIAL started the successfull metal-outfit FROZEN SUN. With Ben, former guitarplayer of BRUTAL OBSCENITY, Sandrijn started a band called CYBERNERD that lasted from 1995 till 1997. For several reasons both DENIAL and CYBERNERD didn't play out much, but Sandrijn recorded a shitload of songs with A FOOLS' PARADISE, DENIAL and CYBERNERD (over three hours of solid, pretty good metal!) Currently Sandrijn is playing in SUPERSPADE, a band with an all star line up: Ben of BRUTAL OBSCENITY, Johan of GORE-fame, Kees from metalband DONOR and Annemiek of BITCHCOCK. They recorded one demo, started in 1996 and don't play out too often.

Ed @ bevrijdingspop Haarlem 1997 Edgar makes music since day 1 of his life. Mainly singing, but playing regular instruments like guitar, bass, drums and piano are also satisfying passtimes. He started out as the singer for a experienced blues cover band at age 14, and herefore being the benjamin of that band. After that he was in a lot of bands, mostly with a strong orientation on progressive rock, fun to play, but only for connaisseurs (as most bands hahaha). After meeting Frans Molenaar Edgar ended up singing for LONGSHOT, gaining a lot of experience and having a lot of fun.
